Qualification for How to Become a Helicopter Pilot

The first thing we need to cover is the qualifications to become a helicopter pilot. These are the requirements you must meet in order to qualify for a helicopter certification.

  • Age: You must be at least 16 years old to get your helicopter pilot’s certificate. (More on the different types of licenses later in this article) If you finally want to get your helicopter pilot license, you will need to be at least 17 years old for that.
  • English Information: To obtain any helicopter license the FAA requires you to speak English fluently. This is done mainly for security reasons so that everyone can communicate clearly and fly through the same set of rules.
  • Medical Examination Certificate: To be eligible to fly you will also need to pass the FAA medical examination. We have a complete guide to this here on our site.

Once you meet these requirements, you are ready for the next step in your journey to becoming a helicopter pilot.

Types of Licenses and Their Requirements (objectives?)

Next you need to think about what your goals are as a helicopter pilot. Do you want to learn to fly as a hobby and the fun and excitement you can do on the weekends?

Let’s take a look at the different types of helicopter pilot licenses and their requirements and what they allow you to do.

1. Private Pilot – Dragonfly license

This is the first certificate or license you will receive on your journey as a helicopter pilot. This will allow you to rent a helicopter and fly to have fun. It also allows you to fly a helicopter for charity events and search and rescue flights as controlled by the agency.

This license will NOT allow you to fly with passengers or charge (make money) as a helicopter pilot.

Here are the requirements for obtaining your Private Airline Aircraft License as stated by the FAA.

  • 40 hours of full flight time
  • 20 hours of flight training with an accredited instructor
  • 3 hours of night flight training
  • One plane across at least 50 miles of nautical (night)
  • 10 departures and 10 stays (full stop)
  • 3 hours of flight training preparing for active testing
  • 10 hours of flight time alone in a helicopter
  • 3 hours cross-country flight (solo)
  • One flight across the country at least 75 miles nautical, and staying at least 3
  • points, and one half of the flight at least 25 miles between departure and arrival.
  • 3 departures and 3 accommodations at a full stop at the airport with a control tower
  • Pass the written test
  • Pass the oral exam
  • Pass a practice flight test

As you can see, this is not the kind of training you can run in a few weeks or take classes in a few weekends. It takes time to learn all the skills needed to fly a helicopter safely.

Important note: The times listed above are the minimum. With so many students, you will end up needing more time than you have listed. Very few students complete their training and obtain their licenses just after a basic education. The same applies to all other types of helicopter pilot licenses listed below.

2. Commercial Airline License

This is the next type of helicopter pilot’s license. In addition to allowing you to do all you can with a private driver’s license, it will also allow you to work and make money as a helicopter pilot. This is the license you will want to shoot if you plan to do your training on a helicopter.

Here are the requirements for obtaining your helicopter pilot license:

  • Hold the current private driver’s license
  • You must enter at least 150 hours of flight time as a pilot
  • For the above 150 hours – 100 hours should be on a helicopter
  • In addition, complete all night flight requirements, pilot training in command training, and cross-country flight
  • Go through the text
  • Pass the oral exam
  • Pass the exercise test plane

As you can see, this is a much bigger commitment than a private helicopter pilot’s license. The reason for this is that you will need to meet very high standards of training and safety in order to fly professionally.

Commercial Aircraft Trainer Rate

While this is not a technological license, this is an additional measure of your helicopter pilot license that allows you to train others to pilot a helicopter.

Here are the requirements:

  • Hold the current helicopter pilot license
  • Enter for at least 15 hours as a helicopter pilot
  • Pass the written test
  • Pass the oral exam
  • Pass a virtual flight test

After meeting the above requirements, you will be able to make money as a helicopter pilot.

Helicopter Instrument Rating

The following is also an additional measure you gain once you have your helicopter pilot license. This allows you to fly in many different situations and situations.

The requirements for measuring helicopter equipment are:

  • Hold at least a helicopter pilot’s license or be trained to earn it
  • Get in 50 hours across the country as a pilot (at least 10 helicopters)
  • Enter 40 hours of flight with reference tools only
  • 20 hours of the above time may be entered using a flight simulation
  • Pass the oral exam
  • Pass the written test
  • Pass the real test plane

Once you have achieved this rating, you will have taken some of the most difficult flight situations and prepared for what many consider to be the greatest achievement as a helicopter pilot.

Best Airline Aircraft License

This is a harvest cream. Once you have obtained this license, you will be able to fly passengers (even paid) as a helicopter pilot. The training hours and flight required are as important as you can imagine because you will not only be responsible for yourself but also for your passengers.

The requirements for obtaining a helicopter aircraft transport license are:

  • Hold a current helicopter pilot with a metal scale
  • You must be at least 23 years old (note the increase here)
  • Enter at least 1200 hours of flight time
  • Those 1200 hours must include 500 hours of cross-country time, 100 hours of
  • night flight, and 75 hours of steel time.
  • Meet additional flight requirements as required by the rules
  • Pass the written test
  • Pass the oral exam
  • Pass a virtual flight test

Getting Started With a Test Flight

All the information you have just learned makes this process seem daunting. In fact, he will take one step at a time. You will learn a little bit and practice while preparing for your first license, and then decide if you want to continue from there.

For many people who have recently obtained a helicopter pilot’s license is a last resort. This will allow you to fly helicopters as a hiker and have a good time. You can always take extra training down the road if you decide to do so.

The point is, instead of getting frustrated, you need to take the initiative.

As you can imagine (and you may have heard) being a helicopter pilot is not cheap. Below is a breakdown of how much you can expect to spend on flying helicopters.

Keep in mind that the prices listed below are estimates and may vary based on a number of factors including the prices set for each school, district, training types, and more. This is a good start, but I would strongly consider asking more detailed questions when visiting flight schools and taking a test flight.

Also, the average price includes the cost of undergraduate training, testing, flight charter, and flight training.

  • Private Aircraft License Fee – $ 12,000 to $ 15,000
  • Airline License Fee – $ 30,000 to $ 35,000
  • Cost Flight Cost: $ 10,000 to $ 15,000
  • Measurement Costs: $ 11,000 to $ 14,000

Cost of License to Vehicle Operating License: At this stage it may be just a matter of getting all the required time for the flight. This can cost about $ 500 an hour, but most people will not do it that way. Instead, many people work as commercial pilots or teachers to earn a living while working instead of paying for it.

Imagine being a helicopter trainer

If you are still wondering how you will pay for that flight training worldwide, here is one option that helps reduce the total cost for most students.

Being a flight instructor means that instead of paying for the 1200 hours of flight training to get your pilot license, you can teach others and earn money while gaining experience and flight time. That way, you not only make a little extra tuition money, you save even more by not paying for hundreds of hours of flight time.

How Long to Get Your Best Airline License

The time it takes for each student to get his or her helicopter license varies depending on the factors. The two main features are:

  • How much time should you devote to flight training / education?
  • What level of license are you looking to get?

If you have other responsibilities in your life (work, family, etc.) it may take longer to get some of these licenses. The best advice is to start with a helicopter pilot license and take your time. Give yourself plenty of free time on it and learn as much as you can.

You will not complete any of this overnight, but if you stick to it and practice it, you can get your secret driver’s license in a matter of months.

If your goal is to reach the top and become a passenger pilot, remember that most students in that program are flight instructors or commercial helicopter pilots. Those functions allow you to earn valuable time and information while earning money instead of spending it.

Helicopter Pilot Income

Because of the effort and dedication required to get a helicopter pilot’s license, it is a very special skill. As a result, it can be a very lucrative field to enter. After all, there are only a handful of people willing to set the time and work required to complete the project and get their helicopter pilot’s license.

If you dream of helicopters that are more than just a hobby and want to have a job as a helicopter pilot, be sure to take a few minutes to read our helicopter salary article. It gives you a detailed description of a helicopter pilot’s salary depending on factors such as experience and line of work.

1. Does a college degree require you to be a helicopter pilot?

A college degree is not required for any helicopter pilot license. So, if you plan to fly as a hobby, not having a college degree will not be a problem. If you plan to travel by airplane, things may be different.

Although a bachelor’s degree does not require a license, many employers prefer the option of having at least one associates’ degree if not a bachelor’s degree.

2. How much does it cost to rent a helicopter?

If you are excited to start flying helicopters in your free time as a hobby after obtaining your private helicopter pilot license, you may be wondering how much it costs to do so. Prices are highly dependent on the part of the country / country you are on and the helicopter you rent.

As a general rule, you can expect to pay within $ 500 / hour for a private helicopter to fly. Larger planes can be more expensive.
